Brief History of CTUST
This university was founded by Dr. Chen Tien-Chi in 1966 under the name - Chungtai Junior College. After almost thirty-nine years, on July 1, 1998, approval was granted to upgrade to a Medical Technology College . Later, on August 1, 2005, the college was upgraded to the University of Science and Technology. Over the years Chung Tai has grown, not only as a provider of technological expertise, but as a sphere of humane and life affirming academic study.
The university system is made up of a school of graduate studies, four-year and two-year colleges, and a five-year senior college program. The development of the school to date can be generally divided into four stages:
Initial stage (1966-1974): Chungtai Junior College was established and funding was raised. We adhered to the school motto: “loyalty, trust, sincerity, and respect ” in all our undertakings. The school`s establishment, in March of 1966, was made possible through a fund donated by the director of Soon Tien General Hospital - Dr. Chen Tien-Chi. Throughout the following years additional departments were established including Medical Technology, Radiology Technology, Medical Management, Nursing and Midwifery (changed the name to Nursing in 1991).
Growth stage (1974-1988): The “College System ” was gradually accepted by students; and thus a two-year college and a department of evening study were established. In addition, a dental laboratory technology department, two-year daytime class nursing department, and an evening study medical management department were formed.
Development stage (1988-1998): At this time we actively promoted the two-year college and evening classes for on-the-job students in order to assist them in furthering their studies so as to promote the upward mobility of the vocational educational system. As well, during this stage an array of other core programs were established. These included a two-year evening nursing department, a two-year daytime medical management department, an evening medical technology department, a two-year daytime/evening Food Sanitation department, daytime/evening Food Sanitation and Child Care department, and a daytime/evening Information Management department.
Transformation stage (1998 up to date): Approval was granted to upgrade the school to the “ Chungtai Institute of Health Sciences and Technology” and we are currently working diligently towards the transformation of the school into a University of Science and Technology. The school was granted college status in 1998. At this time several new departments were added including, an Applied Foreign Language department, Marketing Management department, Radiation Science Graduate School , Medical Management Graduate School , Medical Engineering and Material Graduate School , Medical Biotechnology Graduate School , Environmental and Safe Sanitation Engineering department, and an International Business Department.
The school officially changed its name to the Central Taiwan University of Science and Technology on August 1, 2005.
After upgrading to university status, CTUST was further divided into three colleges and one preparatory colleges (14 departments and 11 graduate institutes) based on the existing departments and graduate schools.
The college of Health Sciences includes a Department of Medical Laboratory Science and Biotechnology, Department of Medical Imaging and Radiological Sciences, Department of Dental Laboratory Technology and Material Sciences, Department of Food Science and Technology, Department of Safety Health and Environmental Engineering, Graduate Institute of Radiological Sciences, Graduate Institute of Medical Biotechnology, Graduate Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Material Science, Graduate Institute of Food Science and Technology, Graduate Institute of Life Sciences and Graduate Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology.
The College of Nursing: Department of Nursing, Department of Early Childhood Care and Education, Department of Eldercare, Graduate Institute of Nursing and Graduate Institute of Cultural and Educational Management.
The College of Management : Department of Healthcare Administration, Department of Management Information Systems, Department of Applied Foreign Languages, Department of Marketing Management, Department of International Business and Graduate Institute of Health Industry Management.
Currently, there are 305 full time teachers, among which, 68% are assistant professors. In 2003 we allocated NT$0.18 billion budget to construct a dormitory for graduate students and outstanding scholars. This facility has been completed and is currently in operation. More recently, NT$0.85 billion has been allocated for the construction of a research buildings and a library and information building which were completed in May, 2008. Upon completion of these buildings total area of buildings are about 39,650 m2. In recent years we have also increased the quantity of our combined library collection to over 210,000 books.
We are committed to an ongoing recruitment of excellent teachers as we endeavor to further upgrade the level of teaching, research, service and industrial/academic cooperation, extended education, and international exchange. It is our sincere hope to cultivate excellent medical technology, health, nursing and management practitioners who will do their part to enable our country to stride forward into the forefront of 21st century development.
Concurrent with these goals, we have also set up a vast array of prospective research centers along with several rare and common instrument centers. We recognize the value of the purchase of modern equipment and the establishment of first rate laboratory facilities. As such we have a strong foundation to enrich our research and development endeavors as we proudly undertake the transition towards a university of medical science and technology.
